Passion for client education

Dr Deb Croucher (Jeffreys) BVsc CertVR enjoyed 15 wonderful years as a vet practice co-owner in the UK. In the 1990s, she passionately educated loyal clients through paper brochures (left).

When Deb was on maternity leave, she learned that Google had evolved to read every word on a website and knew this was the future of information sharing and marketing.

“I could see that Google’s ability to read and organise the world’s information for us all to access would be a game changer in education and business,” says Deb.

“I immediately built a website for our vet practice. My business partner gave me his blessing but added that it was probably a waste of energy because no one would buy anything online – ever! Yet, despite the fact that few people were on the web in those early days, we did get some clients through the website. A trickle at first and more as the internet became mainstream.”

Over the next few years, Deb built a number of websites while she was still practising as a Vet. She learned how search engines work and the basics of code and design. It became abundantly clear to Deb that quality content was the key driver of results, so she carved out the time to study writing and honed the craft of clear and direct written communication.

Deb permanently traded her stethoscope for a laptop in 2008, moving to Australia and founding marketing agency Brilliant Digital in the same year.

“I think a lot of people thought I was crazy.” says Deb “They just couldn’t see how leaving a safe profession for the wild-wild west of websites made any sense at all.”

However, for Deb, the new direction gave her the flexible working she craved as a parent, a vehicle to be creative and the ability to continue to work with veterinary colleagues.
